"Next stop was NBC, which wanted to build a show around Mr. Adams, a onetime standup comic who was then playing a house detective on “The Bill Dana Show,” about a stereotypical Mexican bellhop named Jose Jimenez. Mr. Adam’s character, Byron Glick, spoke in an officious quack meant as a parody of William Powell in the “Thin Man” movies. The voice was so obnoxious that even Mr. Adams considered dropping it – until Mr. Dana told him that a line that was only sort of funny in Mr. Adams’s normal speaking voice became hilarious when he let fly with the Powell squawk. Mr. Adams plugged in the voice for Maxwell Smart, and it became a comedy classic that he would summon in two other successful shows, the “Tennessee Tuxedo” and “inspector Gadget” cartoons. It wasn’t only the voice that was recycled. When stuck in a tight spot, the Glick character would essay some ridiculous lie, smugly punctuating it with a rhetorical, “Would you believe it?” When the straight man said he found it hard to believe, Glick would progressively scale back the original boast a couple of times. Messrs. Mel Brooks and Buck Henry wrote the gag from the other show into their pilot. “It starts out as a bluff,” the show’s executive producer, Leonard Stern, once explained, “and then he plea bargains.” When Smart thinks he’s going to be executed by Mr. Big, he declares that he is about to be rescued by seven Coast Guard cutters. No one believes him. “Would you believe six?” replies Smart. “ How about two cops in a rowboat?” became a catchphrase of the “Get Smart” series, as did Smart’s oft-deployed apology, “Sorry about that, Chief.”
